GREAT EXHIBITION OF THE NORTH - N18 PROGRAMME

JUNE - SEPTEMBER 2018

Amy Foster - 'UNTITLED - PHYSICAL/DIGITAL,' 2018 - Exhibiting at Star and Shadow Cinema, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, 17th-18th August 2018

Foster’s sculpture/installation ‘Untitled Physical/Digital’ – explores themes of interaction, networks, connectivity and accessibility with industrial materials and non-material technologies in the form of a sensor and projection.

In response to the ethos of Great Exhibition of the North -  and GEOTN commission ‘Everything Everytime’ by Naho Matsuda, the piece celebrates Newcastle’s architecture by echoing the shapes and forms that make up the city’s cultural landmarks. The materials used also mirror the aesthetic qualities of such structures as the Gateshead Millennium Bridge or the Sage.

The projected images originated from Twitter hashtags which reflects the artist’s 200-mile distance from the city during the making of the work. Collecting everyday data from an open data source ties into the notion of accessibility and connectivity online which is something also translated physically with the sensor technology.

Interaction with the sensor triggers these edited images at random and a live number that tracks audience’s distance from the tech. In engaging with the work and navigating around the sculpture, the audience are actively engaging in a ‘network’ that requires human presence.

As much as tech is automated and systematic – our physical and social conception of it is just as important to its function and role in society.
